For the second consecutive year, senior Barrett Martens
will be advancing to the Missouri Class 3A state golf
tournament. Last year the entire Platte County golf team
qualified for the tournament, and Martens took first overall
at state.
This year the entire team did not qualify for state as
it did last year, but Martens will be their competing
as an individual and will attempt to defend his title.
Martens qualified for state after a good performance at
Districts.
The Platte County golf team competed against Richmond
against Richmond, Excelsior Springs, Maryville, Chillicothe,
Savannah, Marshall, Benton, Kearney, and Lafayette at
the District 8 golf tournament. The tournament was held
at the par 71 Shirkey golf course in Richmond.
In order for Platte County to qualify for state as a
team, they would have needed to finish within the top
two overall at Districts. The Pirate golf team could not
quite accomplish that feat, however. The Pirates finished
fourth overall, out of the ten teams competing in District
8, with a team score of 320. The Pirates finished behind
Richmond, 309, and Excelsior Springs, 312, who qualified
their teams for state, and Maryville, who finished third
with 313.
Martens qualified for state because was one of the top
five individuals in the field who did not have his team
qualify for state. Martens tied for second place at Districts
after shooting a 75.
The state golf tournament will be held at the Rivercut
Golf Course in Springfield on May 13 and 14.
