The Platte County Pirate swimming team opened its 2000-2001
season by finishing fifth at the Center Invitational.
The Pirates were able to accumulate 136 points, but that
was not enough to win the meet. Raytown won the meet with
347 points, Raytown South was second with 269, then Bishop
Miege with 174, and OHara narrowly edged the Pirates,
as they were able to put up 142 points. The Pirates beat
Rockhurst, who had 109, Ray-Pec had 82, and Center concluded
the teams at the meet with 4 points.
The first event of the meet was the 200 yard Medley Relay,
but the Pirates were disqualified.
Sophomore Jared Hall finished twelfth in 2:48 in the
200 Yard Freestyle.
Four different Platte County swimmers finished the 50
Yard Free. Senior Brad Hankins finished 9th in 28 seconds,
sophomore Craig Coons came in 17th in 34 seconds, freshman
Andrew Hummel finished 18th in 35 seconds, and freshman
Cody Werenbech finished 21st in 37 seconds.
Senior Cliff Riner finished second in the 100 Yard Butterfly
in 1 minute, 9 seconds, just 6 seconds behind the first
place finisher. Junior Josh Brunkhorst finished 8th in
1 minute, 25 seconds.
Sophomore Bobby Passmore led the Pirate swimmers in the
100 Yard Freestyle by finishing in 1 minute, 6 seconds.
Hankins came in right behind Passmore in 8th place in
1 minute, 7 seconds; freshman Ryan Allen concluded the
Platte County swimmers by coming in 14th in 1 minute,
13 seconds.
Platte County then went on to finish fourth in the 200
Yard Freestyle Relay with a team time of 1 minute, 56
seconds.
Brunkhorst led the Pirates in the 100 Yard backstroke
by finishing 3rd in 1 minute, 13 seconds. Junior Barry
Brandt was the next Platte County swimmer to finish, coming
in 6th in 1 minute, 20 seconds, and sophomore Jeremiah
Tylski finished 7th in 1 minute, 21 seconds.
Riner was the top finisher in the 100 Yard Breaststroke
coming in 3rd place, finishing in 1 minute, 14 seconds.
Passmore finished 9th in 1 minute, 24 seconds; Coons came
in 10th in 1 minute, 28 seconds; and Allen finished 17th
in 1 minute, 45 seconds.
The Pirates came in fourth overall in the 400 Yard Freestyle
Relay, finishing in 4 minutes, 21 seconds.
The Pirates will be in action again on Friday, Dec. 14,
and Sat., Dec. 15, when they will travel to Raytown to
compete in the Raytown Meet.
