92 overpass reopened to traffic
Area commuters were relieved last week when Missouri
Department of Transportation crews reopened the Hwy. 92
overpass over Hwy. 45 between Platte City and Leavenworth.
For about a week, MoDOT officials shut down the overpass
for emergency repairs. Traffic was detoured south to the
Hwy. 45 spur to reach the Hwy. 92 bridge over the Missouri
River. Eastbound traffic was also detoured.
The overpass was shut down when a crack was found in
a girder.
According to MoDOT Area Engineer Martin Liles, at approximately
10 a.m. last Wednesday crews began working on a replacement
girder. Liles added that crews continued work on the repairs
until 11 p.m. last Wednesday. By late Thursday afternoon,
according to Liles, the bridge was reopened to traffic.
Liles also added Route 45 was closed under the overpass
while the girder was moved into place. Traffic on Route
92 overpass was redueced to one lane and Hwy. 45 was closed
during the girder's replacement. Flaggers controlled traffic
on the overpass.
Liles said an inspection on the bridge was done while
crews were repairing the girder. However, the bridge will
be formally inspected in a year.
Crews found the bridge to have no other problems.
MoDOT announced recently it has begun to reinspect all
state-maintained bridges over the Missouri and Mississippi
rivers to look for any possible damage due to dramatic
weather fluctuations over the past few weeks.
