Sales
tax for roads is proposed
Gathering support for the county's transportation plan,
the Platte County Commission will participate in a series
of Transportation Task Force update meetings throughout
October.
In an effort led by 2nd District Commissioner Steve Wegner,
the county began reviewing the long-time problems that
have plagued Platte County roads in 2001.
Together with a 25-member citizen task force, the county
has been developing a plan that will bring the greatest
transportation benefits to the county.
After months of collaboration, the citizen task force
has made a recommendation for a 3/8 cents sales tax for
road improvements. During this series of Transportation
Task Force update meetings, Platte County officials will
discuss the proposed tax and its impact on roads and infrastructure
in neighboring cities.
Three Transportation Task Force meetings will be held
at:
7 p.m., Oct. 7, at Parkville City Hall
7 p.m., Oct. 9, Edgerton City Hall; and
7 p.m., Oct. 16, at Weston City Hall
The commission had invited the mayors, aldermen, and
trustees from every municipality in Platte County to attend
these meetings.
"Seventy-six percent of the county's population
lives in incorporated areas of the county," Wegner
said. "In order for the county to pass a transportation
plan, it's essential that we have the support of these
incorporated areas."
