Bracket Battle

by Ivan Foley
Landmark editor

It’s time to fill out a basketball bracket for your chance to win money or a free subscription to the Platte County Landmark.

The bracket for the men’s NCAA Basketball Championship Tournament has been announced. It’s time to get it on.

The Landmark is rolling with its 18th annual NCAA Bracket Battle. It's the most prestigious Bracket Battle this side of the Mississippi, self-proclaimed. To win a prize, all you have to do is finish with a better bracket than Ivan Foley, Landmark publisher.

Entries in The Landmark’s contest are due by 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 20. For a printable bracket, go here: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/bracket

To enter The Landmark’s bracket contest, email your entry to ivan@plattecountylandmark.com or if you’d rather, fax your bracket to The Landmark at 816-858-2313.

Another option is to drop your entry by the historic Landmark office at 252 Main St. in historic downtown Platte City, just west of the historic Platte County Courthouse.

Entry into The Landmark’s contest is free, of course, and limited to one per person.

The winning bracket will earn you $100.

Anyone finishing with a higher score than Landmark publisher Ivan Foley will win a free one-year subscription to The Landmark, a $25.92 value.

Standings will be published in The Landmark and on our web site as the contest progresses. Once it’s done and you have a higher score than Foley, you’ll be responsible to call 816-858-2313 or email ivan@plattecountylandmark.com to claim your free subscription.

Entrants will also get the chance to claim bragging rights over not just Foley but also other members of The Landmark’s cast of characters, including Chris Kamler (@thefakened on Twitter and Rambling Moron columnist on page 3), Greg Hall (@greghall24 and Off the Couch columnist at plattecountylandmark.com), and Parallax Look columnist Brian Kubicki (@bkparallax), and our sports expert, facilities manager/Washburn student/Topeka banker Kurt Foley (@durty24).

To enter, all you need to do is print off a copy of the bracket from the internet or clip one out of the newspaper. Fill out the entire bracket, making predictions on every tournament game. Then, send it to The Landmark.

Please write in the name of the team you think will win, NOT the number of the team’s seed (this makes for much easier grading by our hard-working, eye-strained staff).

Any lines left blank will be counted as a loss.

As a potential tiebreaker, write in how many points you think will be scored in the national championship game.

Important: Don’t forget to put your name and phone number on your bracket.

Scoring will be done as follows:

Two points for each correct first round pick; four points for second round winners; six points for third round winners; eight points in the fourth round; 15 points in the fifth (Final Four) and 30 points for picking the correct tournament champion.

The up-to-date standings of our contest will be posted as the tournament moves along in the print edition of The Landmark and also at plattecountylandmark.com, at Twitter.com/ivanfoley, and at Foley’s Facebook page.

Questions? Call Foley at 816-858-0363 or email ivan@plattecountylandmark.com.

Let’s get this party started.
