Three local teenagers suffered injuries in a one-vehicle
wreck on Highway 92 east of Platte City Saturday night.
All three of the teens are from Platte City
and all are students at Platte County High School.
According to the Platte County Sheriff's
Department, a 1992 Honda Civic driven by Trevor Clay,
18, skidded off the highway and collided with a fence
and a telephone pole before coming to a stop. The car
had been eastbound.
Clay and Verdoorn were taken to North Kansas
City Hospital. Both remained hospitalized on Tuesday.
Clay is reported to have suffered a ruptured
spleen and a cracked vertebra. Verdoorn suffered a broken
leg, a fractured pelvis and head lacerations. Verdoorn
is a two-time state champion wrestler for the Platte County
Pirates who recently signed a letter of intent to wrestle
at Michigan University.
Jones was taken to Liberty Hospital with
a broken leg. He also remained hospitalized on Tuesday.
The accident report indicates Clay and Verdoorn
were wearing seat belts; Jones, who was in the back seat
of the vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt.
The accident occurred at 10:59 p.m. on Hwy.
92 near Winan Road.
Shelle Browning, spokesperson for the sheriff's
department, said the accident report lists probable contributing
circumstances as speed too fast for conditions. She said
she has no information on whether a citation was issued.
